Residents ride on Team Lungstrong in Pan Mass Challenge 2012
Team Lungstrong fund raising efforts are geared to raising money for lung cancer research and treatment at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
All of the money raised by PMC goes to DFCI. Lungstrong's goal is to raise $250,000 this year. The team has grown to 28 riders and welcomes new members to the team. PMC is on target to raise 38 million dollars this year.
Lung Cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. among every ethnic group and accounts for one in every 3 cancer deaths. It will kill more people than the next four deadly cancers...combined. It will kill over three times as many men as prostate cancer and nearly twice as many women as breast cancer. One in five women diagnosed with lung cancer never smoked. Over 60% of new cases are never smokers or former smokers, many of whom quit decades ago. This year, more than 215,000 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer and more than 161,000 will succumb to the disease.
Attached is a PMC list of West Hartford residents who rode in 2011.
People can donate to PMC and/or sponsor riders. E-gift numbers are attached to make it easy to donate on-line. To see the list of riders for 2012, visit www.pmc.org/profile/TL0096.

Pizza box art raise funds for arts
when the boxes are displayed August 22 at the restaurant in Farmington, Connecticut's Westfarms Mall.
California Pizza Kitchen is committed to supporting children in local communities through its CPK FUNdraisers program, and from 11 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22, the restaurant will contribute 20
percent of sales to the Farmington Valley Arts Center (FVAC), an Avon, Connecticut-based non-profit that provides a comprehensive assortment of arts-related programs and opportunities for all ages.
Diners will also have the chance to view the more than 40 pizza boxes created by students and to vote for a People's Choice Award Winner, who will have his or her box framed and displayed in the restaurant for a year and receive an MVP pass, good for 12 free kids' meals during the year.

West Hartford's Camp Isola Bella wins Campership funding
West Hartford, CT – The American Camp Association, New England has just awarded West Hartford's own Camp Isola Bella with American Camp Association Campership Funds. Camp Isola Bella is just one of 65 ACA accredited day and overnight camps across all six New England states that have received camperships on behalf of specific campers.
One hundred and six children will experience the joy of day or overnight camp this summer thanks to the ACA New England Campership Fund. The first-ever Camp Champions Celebration held at Fenway Park last fall raised the funds that will make summer camp experiences possible for more than 100 lucky campers. The funds for each camper will go directly to each of the 64 camps.
Bette Bussel, Executive Director of ACA New England, notes that campers receiving camperships will attend an array of summer camps representing the tremendous variety of camp opportunities available in all six New England states—day and overnight, private and agency, religiously-affiliated and nonsectarian.
"At ACA New England, we believe there's a camp out there for everyone and that every child deserves to have a camp experience. ACA Accredited camps applied for campership funding on behalf of qualified campers, who met eligibility guidelines for the federal free and reduced lunch program. The recipients of these camperships are some of New England's most underserved children."
Plans for the second Camp Champions Celebration are set for the evening of Nov. 1 at Fenway Park's State Street Pavilion. Hundreds of supporters are expected to attend the event that will raise campership funds for the summer of 2013.
Mayor Thomas M. Menino of Boston will also receive ACA New England's Camp Champions Award for his significant support of New England's summer camps. More information can be found at www.ACANewEngland.org
Apply now for free USJ forensic science camp program
CWEALF petitioned the State of Connecticut on behalf of USJ to secure the funding for this program. A group of students from the Hartford area will learn about the science behind a crime scene investigation; young women and ethnically diverse students in grades 8 - 12 have been actively recruited.
The program promotes and encourages participants to pursue the biological sciences and the health professions as possible fields of study in planning towards a future career. Students will focus on the cellular and molecular biology techniques used in forensic laboratories to solve crimes in collaboration with police and fire departments.
This program, which runs from August 13 - 17, 2012, is free of charge and offered on a first come, first served basis (space is limited). Hartford area high school students are encouraged to apply; for more information, email campusj@usj.edu.
"This summer program helps stimulate interest among young people in the important fields of biology and health science," said University of Saint Joseph President Pamela Trotman Reid, Ph.D. "USJ is honored to offer this new learning opportunity for high school students on the science of investigating and solving crimes, and we are grateful to CWEALF for their collaboration on this project."
University of Saint Joseph faculty who will be actively involved in "The Science to Solve Crimes: The Science behind Crime Scene Investigation (C.S.I.)," include: Christopher R. Zito, Ph.D., assistant professor of Biology and Grant Program Director; and Lucia Jilaveanu, M.D., Ph.D., who serves as a member of USJ's adjunct graduate faculty.
