Catholic Charities a finalist in Aetna 'Voices of Health' campaign

Catholic Charities is Finalist in Aetna Voices of Health Campaign - one of 33 groups from across the country competing for $30,000 first place award --

Hartford -- Catholic Charities announced today that they are a finalist in the 2013 "Aetna Voices of Health" national campaign. Voting for the campaign takes place at http://www.aetnavoicesofhealth.com/catholic-charities-healthy-babies.php and goes through October 13th.  More information about Catholic Charities and the voting process can be found on the agency's website www.ccaoh.org.

Aetna will award $30,000 to the group that gets the most online votes and $20,000 to the second-place finisher. All of the finalists promote wellness locally by fighting conditions like asthma, diabetes and childhood obesity, which hit people of color at higher rates.

Catholic Charities is one of the largest non-governmental providers of human services in the State of Connecticut. It serves 25,000 people of all faiths annually from 34 locations throughout the Archdiocese, and employs more than five hundred social service professionals.  It has been the licensed, accredited social service arm of the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Hartford, which is comprised of Hartford, Litchfield and New Haven Counties, for over 90 years.

The "Aetna Voices of Health" website features a one-minute video from Catholic Charities entitled "Nurturing Healthy Babies," describing how the prize money would help Catholic Charities achieve its mission. The video highlights one of the many valuable services that Catholic Charities provides.  Pregnancy counseling, infant and toddler care, elderly services, mental health counseling, and school readiness are just a few of the other programs that the agency offers.

"We are thrilled to be a finalist in the "Aetna Voices of Health" campaign," said Catholic Charities CEO Lois Nesci. "It is a way of validating what we do, and this award could go a long way in helping more people. This is why I encourage everyone to take the time and vote for us. Help us spread the word through social media," Nesci said.

Aetna created "Voices of Health" in 2011 to honor groups that share its goals of closing racial and ethnic

health care inequality gaps and helping people live healthier lives. The campaign is part of its support of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project. Aetna donated $1.275 million to support the project, with a portion of its gift used to help plant 180 new cherry trees at the memorial site in Washington, D.C.
