40 runners from age 6 to 64 compete in track competition
The first "Night of Miles" was held Tuesday night at the Litchfield Plumb Hills track complex.
Under hot and steamy conditions, 40 runners in ages from 6 to 64 took part in one mile runs by age-group.
The sole record of the night was in the male 10-12 Division as Matthew Remigino, 11, of West Hartford knocked a whopping 24 seconds off the old record with a 5:10 clocking. Matthew, whose grandfather, Lindy Remigino, won the 100 meter dash in the 1952 Olympics will compete in the National Junior Olympic Championships in Baltimore, Md. next week in the 1500m and 3000m runs. Matthew's mother, Meredith, win the 40-49 division with a 6:00 clocking.
Closest race finish was in the 50-59 men's division as New Hartford's Bob Deming caught early leader Tom Brayton on the backstretch and held off a final challenge by Brayton to win the mile, 5:54 to 5:58.
The mile series, in its sixth year, is sponsored by the Litchfield Park and Recreation and the Litchfield Track Club. The next race will be on Tuesday, Aug. 21, at 6:30 p.m.
The fourth week of the Summer Seriec cross country races will be held Thursday, July 19, at White Memorial Conservation center at 6:30 p.m.
