Knights of Columbus steps up to assist food bank
NEW HAVEN – With poverty rising to the highest level since the 1960s, donations to the Connecticut Food Bank have been declining this summer just when they are needed most.
To help the Food Bank continue to provide food at this critical time, the Knights of Columbus has announced that it will provide financial and food drive assistance to the Connecticut Food Bank to help it maintain its food programs this summer and beyond.
A $12,000 check will be delivered to the East Haven offices of the Connecticut Food Bank by the Knights of Columbus tomorrow. The check will represent a $6,000 donation from the employees of the Knights of Columbus and a matching $6,000 from the organization.
Knights of Columbus Councils in Connecticut – beginning with those in New Haven – will also begin local food drives in support of the work of the Connecticut Food Bank.
"As our country deals with a combination of rising food prices and ever higher rates of poverty, we see this as an opportunity to help those most in need, which has been our mission and our work for 130 years," said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. "It is our hope that the support of the Connecticut Food Bank will keep families and their children from having to go to bed hungry at night."
The Knights of Columbus is headquartered in New Haven, and has local councils throughout the state. The Connecticut Food Bank has locations in Fairfield, Waterbury and East Haven, with its headquarters located at its East Haven location.
